Smile – It’s Orchid Season in Dublin

Aaahhh! Spring is (finally) in the air. Which means it’s time for one of our favorite events of the year: The Dublin Orchid Fair. Exotic and evocative, orchids are a marvel of the natural world. Placed indoors, they have an ability to lift a room – along with the people’s spirits. Despite being delicate and elegant they somehow have a magnetic pull on our attention. Though subtle, they will not go unnoticed – which makes them the ideal statement plant for offices. You’d love to use fresh orchids if only they bloomed all year round and weren’t so tricky to maintain? Artificial silk flowers could be the perfect alternative for you.

The orchid’s flaring, whorl-shaped petals are what makes it so distinctive from other flowers. It is a deceptively robust plant. A well-tended orchid can last for years, its wafer-thin blooms enduring for 2-3 months per annum. Some species will even blossom twice in a year, though one flowering season is more common.

Care is key to orchid longevity.  Being tropical/subtropical in origin they have different needs to your typical houseplants. Above all, you need to be diligent with watering. No two species of orchid have the same H20 needs. They drink more or less depending on the time of year. Pot size and potting mix also influence the amount of hydration needed. Orchids don’t generally respond well to ‘top-ups’ between waterings, being kept in pots on a water-filled tray or watered with “hard” water (water with high mineral content).

Getting the temperature right – and maintaining it – is also important. Again, different species will thrive at different heats and light exposure. Fortunately, the orchid’s leaves act as a type of gauge: bright green signals a healthy plant, dark green is the plant’s way of telling you it needs more sun, red means your plant is overexposed and needs some shadow.

If this all sounds a bit too much like hard work, there is a man-made alternative: The artificial orchid.

Artificial Silk Orchids

It is a special hobby to nurture an orchid plant and see it reward you time and time again with its amazing, sculptural blooms. Home is the ideal place to do this, where you can give your plant optimum protection and control its environment. The office is not such an ideal setting. Though orchids can survive perfectly well in business locations they tend to need expert care.

Artificial silk flowers are a strong alternative. Modern production techniques mean silk flowers are getting so close to resembling the real thing that the difference can only be detected by really close scrutiny. A nice arrangement of silk orchids will add a year-round touch of distinction and good-taste to a reception desk or a boardroom without requiring any effort.

Mummie Plants prepare high quality silk orchids in a variety of styles, adding to their already-striking display with preserved moss, branch weaves and stylish pots. All our arrangements are made-to-order so their composition perfectly fits their designated locations within your building.
